Gummy smile reduction: A Beverly Hills, CA beauty secret

In an ideal smile, the upper lip grazes the gum line when you smile. However, an estimated 15 percent of our population has a disproportionate gum to tooth ratio. When they smile, a broad band of gum tissue shows above the upper arch. The team at Dental Health and Wellness Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, CA provides conventional and advanced laser surgery for gummy smile reduction.

What causes a gummy smile?

The best proportions are maintained with about two millimeters oof gum showing when you smile. Any amount over three millimeters looks “gummy.” In addition, some people have uneven gums. These conditions are generally genetic and caused by: Hypermobile lips that pull way back when you smile, Short upper lip, Overbite, Short teeth and Excessive gum tissue.

The last point is the most common, and the most easily addressed without orthodontics or plastic surgery.

Gum reshaping

Gummy smile surgery is a relatively minor procedure that creates toothy smiles. While laser surgery causes minimal discomfort, local anesthetic may be administered to ensure your wellbeing. Then, the dentist uses a special laser to precisely recontour gums without harm to teeth. The laser automatically cauterizes, so there is little to no bleeding, and gums heal quickly with minimal risk of infection. The procedure can be performed alone, or in preparation for dental veneers, crowns, or fillings.

In some cases, traditional oral surgery is necessary for gum recontouring. Our periodontist is also trained and experienced in this technique.

It is time to smile!
