Understanding implants: What makes them unique

Implants are the only prosthetic option that replaces both the visible parts of teeth and the roots in the jawbone. Since the implant-supported alternatives available at our office mimic the structure of natural and healthy teeth, our many valued patients from across the Beverly Hills, California, area enjoy the most lifelike and lasting feel and function from their new crowns, bridges, and dentures.

“Building” implants

A dental implant is a tiny cylinder or post made from a biocompatible or tissue-friendly material. In a brief and expertly-planned oral surgery, the implant is placed into the jawbone to replicate the root of a missing tooth. The surrounding bone and implant fuse together through a natural process called osseointegration. This process results in a solid foundation for the restoration that is later connected to it because the implant effectively becomes a part of the jaw. Since each implant resides in the jaw, dental implants provide the essential stimulation for strong and healthy facial bone. Maintaining supportive facial tissue strength also helps keep these implant-retained teeth in top shape. They are built to last a lifetime with good oral care.

Materials option No. 1: Zirconia

Zirconia dental implants are made out of a ceramic or zirconium oxide. many of our patients choose a metal free option. Zirconia implants are attractive because these patients prefer to have no metals in their bodies. This option has been around for a couple of decades, and a large body of research exists to support their safety and clinical effectiveness. They can be more expensive than titanium because special manufacturing and surgical techniques are required when placing zirconia implants. Dr. Sanda Moldovan is a leader and educator in ceramic dental implants. She offers top of the line non-metal dental implant therapy.

Materials option No. 2: Titanium

Titanium dental implants have been around since the 1960s. Titanium, one of the most prevalent metals on Earth, has a low electrical conductivity grade. This characteristic probably accounts for the bone cells’ affinity for titanium and their strong attachment to it during osseointegration. Titanium is unique because the cells do not generally “like” other metals. In turn, due to its compatibility with cells, titanium has been used to replace missing teeth, hips, knees, spinal fusion, and all kinds of medical applications that add good, quality years to our lives.
